almost 10 years old

Cosmo came to us in March 1999 as a three-year-old at the height of his show and working career, a gift from his breeders, because we needed him. It seems right and natural that he has joined our family, as his mother was born here.

In May 1999, at our first National Specialty together, Cosmo won the Working Retriever Dog class at the FCRSA National Specialty in Rhode Island.

In Fall 1999, he earned his UKC CD in 3 straight trials with scores averaging 192+; 2 UKC Agility legs with scores averaging 197; his Junior Hunter title in 4 straight tests; his NAHRA Started Retriever title in 4 straight tests; and 2 legs on his Novice Agility title, both with class placements.

In Spring 2000, he earned his first NAJ leg and finished his NA title with another placement -- his 4th new title in the 12 months since relocating; earned his first 2 Open Agility legs and his first 2 CDX legs, with all placements; finished his UKC Agility I title with a 199; and won a Best of Breed right after qualifying in the Open A obedience ring.

In May 2000, at the FCRSA National Specialty in Kentucky, Cosmo was one of 10 flat-coats to earn the Triple Crown award (his mother was also among the 10 winners!). He qualified in JH and WC and earned a JAM in Unsteady Singles; finished his CDX in 3 trials with 2nd place; and won 4th place in the Working Retriever Dog show class.

In Summer/Fall 2000, he earned 2 UKC Hunting Retriever Club Started passes; finished his Open Agility title with first place and a score of 98; earned his first Agility Excellent leg with second place and 95; and sired his first litter (4 CH's plus field, agility (MX/MXJ titles/MACH points), obedience titles/HIT and Rally Excellent at 6 years old, Iron Dog Award at 2005 National).

In Spring/Summer 2001, Cosmo finished his Agility Excellent title with 2 clean runs and earned his 2nd NAJ leg; passed 2 more UKC Hunting Retriever Club tests to earn his SHR title; made the cut of specials in Best of Breed at the CRFCRC Supported Entry show; won Best of Breed over other male specials and a pull in the Sporting Group at the Langley Kennel Club show; and sired his second and third litters, now 6 years old (5 kids major pointed by 9 months; now 7 CH's and obedience, field and agility titles; 2 daughters invited to the AKC/Eukanuba Classic in 2003; Specialty JAM's 2005 and 2007!).

In Fall/Winter 2001, Cosmo earned his first 2 UD legs, both with 2nd placements; earned his Working Certificate Excellent; won Best of Breed over 4 other male specials; won the Working Dog and Stud Dog classes and made all 4 cuts in Best of Breed at the CRFCRC Supported Entry show; and sired his fourth and fifth litters, now 5 years old (4 CH's, others pointed; SH/WCX, agility titles and CD titles/CDX legs so far).

In Spring/Summer 2002, Cosmo made all the cuts in Best of Breed from the Working Dog class at the CRFCRC Supported Entries in March; won Best of Breed from the Veteran Dog class over ranked specials at Gloucester KC in May; placed in Veteran Sweeps and Stud Dog class and made the cut in Veteran Dogs at the National Specialty in June, as well as qualifying in Veterans Obedience and JH at the Specialty to earn a Triathlon Award; earned his first UKC CDX leg; and sired his sixth litter, now 5 years old (CH's and pointed OA/NAJ kids).

In Fall/Winter 2002, Cosmo finished his UD title (qualifying 3 times in 2 weekends!), completing his requirements for induction into the FCRSA Hall of Fame; won Best of Breed over specials from the Veteran Dog class at Langley KC in November; won Best Veteran In Sweepstakes at the CRFCRC fall Supported Entry; and sired two litters including a European litter, both now 4 years old (Multi-Group placer, Specialty JAM's 2006 and 2007, 7 CH's, another major pointed, 4 Fin. CC's; CDX, Rally, Agility, WC/X, JH/SH titles, and Fin. Retriever Test pass).

In Spring 2003, Cosmo finished his UKC CDX title with placements in the Open B class, and earned his NAP agility title and 2 legs on his NJP with 4 fast clean runs and 3 blue ribbons. At the National Specialty, he qualifed in JH and was invited to run the 3rd mark in the Steady Singles Championship; won first place in his agility class with a clean run score of 100 and time of 33 seconds on a 44 second course to finish his NJP title; placed third in Veterans obedience with a score of 191; made the cut in Veteran Sweeps and Stud Dogs; won first place in the Working Retriever Dog show class; and was one of 10 dogs to earn the Specialty Versatilty Award.

In Summer/Fall 2003, Cosmo won Best of Breed over specials from the Veteran Dog class at Va. Beach KC in May and Langley KC in Oct., and sired his 9th and 10th litters, now 3 and 4 years old (Multi-Group placer, 6 CH's, others major pointed; CD's, TD, JH's, SH, MH, WCX's, Derby 2nd and Steady Singles win at 2005 National, Hat Trick Award at 2007 National).

In 2004, Cosmo leaped out of agility retirement to earn his first OAP and OJP legs in February, both with fast clean runs and first place, and won Best in Veteran Sweeps both days at the CRFCRC Supported Entry shows in April. At the National Specialty in California in May, he won the 9-11 Year Veteran Sweeps class; won the Working Dog class; won a JAM in Best of Breed competition under Brenda Phillips; and scored 192 in Veterans Obedience. A few weeks later, he won Best of Breed over other male specials and a Sporting Group IV, followed by a Sporting Group II in June! Cosmo won multiple Best of Breeds in Sept. and Nov. and placed in Veterans Obedience in Oct. with 189, 191 scores. Always proudly owner handled or breeder/owner handled, he finished 2004 in the Top 15 Flat-Coats by all-breed points, at the age of nine!

In early 2005, Cosmo qualified in all 4 all-breed Veterans Obedience trials we entered, with scores of 190, 194, 194 and 196.5, and earned his first Rally Novice leg with a 96. At the April 2005 National Specialty in Georgia, he placed in Veteran Sweeps 9-11 Years; placed in Working Dogs; placed in Stud Dogs; and was just out of the ribbons in Veterans Obedience. In May at the age of 10, he won Best of Breed and Best of Opposite over Group placers in entries of 15+ flat-coats, and in June he won Best of Breed at his next 3 shows. At 10.5 years old, he earned his 2nd Rally Novice leg with a perfect 100 score and a placement in a large class, and finished his title the next day with a 99. Back in the breed ring in November, he won Best of Breed both days over specials from the Veteran Dog class, and a Group IV! From a total of 8 shows since his 10th birthday, Cosmo won 6 Bests of Breed, a Group placement, a BOS and a Veteran Sweeps BOS, to rank him in the Top 20 Flat-Coats in 2005 by all-breed points, at age ten . . . culminating a glorious decade in the ring.

On Feb. 6, 2006, we bid farewell to one of dogdom's finest -- a happy, gentle, loving soul, everything a flat-coat should be.

Cosmo's Show Career

Short Video Clips of Cosmo, 2000 National Specialty:

Long Download Video of Cosmo, November 2003 Veteran Sweeps:

Cosmo's show career began with a Puppy Match Group One at 4 months old, followed by his first major at 6 months old. He went Best of Winners for all his points except once, when he deferred to his littermate.

At 12 months old, Cosmo placed in a large (20+) class of 12-18 Month Dogs at the 1996 US Specialty under British breeder/judge/field trialer The Honorable Amelia Jessel; and again placed in 12-18 Month Dogs at the 1996 Canadian Specialty under British breeder/judge/field trialer Mr. Peter Johnson.

Cosmo won his first Best of Breed over a special at 15 months, and finished his Championship at 24 months with his third major -- a Best of Breed over specials from the Bred-By class under Specialty judge Miss Dorothy Macdonald.

Cosmo's brief specials career as a young dog resulted in a Supported Entry Best of Breed win from the Working Dog class in an entry of 23 flat-coats including numerous specials, and several more Breed wins and a strong Group pull before relocating from Blazin to Lyric, followed by his Working Dog class wins at the 1999 US Specialty and 1999 Spring CRFCRC Supported Entry.

Shown only 3 times in 2000, he was unopposed in the Working Dog class at the CRFCRC Spring Supported Entry; won Best of Breed at the Chesapeake Dog Fanciers Association show in April 2000; and placed 4th in Working Dogs at the 2000 US National Specialty.

Shown very sparingly in 2001, he made the cut in Best of Breed at the CRFCRC Supported Entry show in April, won Best of Breed and a cut in the Sporting Group at the Langley KC show in May, won Best of Breed in an entry of 13 flat-coats at the Gloucester KC show on November 4, and won the Working Dog and Stud Dog classes and made all 4 cuts of specials at the CRFCRC Supported Entry show on November 24.

In 2002, Cosmo made all the cuts in Best of Breed from the Working Dog class at the CRFCRC spring Supported Entries in March; won Best of Breed from the Veteran Dog class over ranked male specials at the Gloucester KC show in May (below left); placed in Veteran Sweeps and Stud Dogs and made the cut in Veteran Dogs at the FCRSA National Specialty in June; won Best of Breed from the Veteran Dog class over other specials at the Langley KC show in November (below right); and won Best Veteran In Sweepstakes at the CRFCRC fall Supported Entry.

In 2003, from a handful of shows, Cosmo won the Working Retriever Dog class at the National Specialty and made the cut in Stud Dogs and Veteran Sweeps there; won Best of Breed over specials from the Veteran Dog class the following weekend; and won Best of Breed over 6 male specials from the Veteran Dog class in late Oct.

In 2004, he won Best in Veteran Sweeps both days at the CRFCRC Spring Supported Entry shows in April; then went to the National Specialty in California in May and won the 9-11 Year Veteran Sweeps class; won the Working Dog class; and won a Judge's Award of Merit in Best of Breed competition under British breeder/judge/field trialer Mrs. Brenda Phillips. A few weeks later, he won Best of Breed over other male specials and a Sporting Group IV, followed by a Sporting Group II in June and multiple Best of Breed wins in September and November! Ranked #15 FCR by all-breed points in 2004 (Canine Chronicle); ranked #1 FCR top producer in 2004 (Dog News).

In April 2005, at the National Specialty in Georgia, Cosmo placed 3rd in 9-11 Year Veteran Sweeps class; placed 2nd in the Working Dog class; and placed 4th in the Stud Dog class, in addition to being the sire and grandsire of two breed JAM's and sire of the Singles Champion. In May at the age of 10, he won Best of Breed and Best of Opposite over Group placers in entries of 15+ flat-coats, and in June he again won 3 Bests of Breed; in November at 10.5 years he won Best of Breed over specials both days, and a Group IV! Shown 8 times since his 10th birthday, Cosmo won 6 Bests of Breed, a Group placement, and an Opposite to a Group winning special, to rank #19 FCR in 2005 by all breed points (Canine Chronicle), topping off a decade of winning by a consummate showman.

"I'm Still Here"
I stood beside your bed last night
I came to have a peek
I could see that you were crying
You found it hard to sleep

I whined to you softly
As you brushed away a tear
"It's me, I haven't left you,
I'm well, I'm fine, I'm here."

I was close to you at breakfast
I watched you pour the tea
You were thinking of the many times
Your hands reached down to me

I was with you at the shops today
Your arms were getting sore
I longed to take your parcels
I wish I could do more

I was with you at my grave today
You tend it with such care
I want to reassure you
That I'm not lying there

I walked with you toward the house
As you fumbled for your key
I gently put my paw on you
I smiled and said "It's me."

You looked so very tired
And sank into a chair
I tried so hard to let you know
That I was standing there

It's possible for me to be
So near you everyday
To say to you with certainty
"I never went away."

You sat there very quietly
Then you smiled, I think you knew
In the stillness of that evening
I was very close to you.

The day is over...
I smile and watch you yawning
And say "Good night, God bless,
I'll see you in the morning."

And when the time is right
For you to cross the brief divide
I'll rush across to greet you
And we'll stand side by side

I have so many things to show you
There is so much for you to see
Be patient, live your journey out
And then come home to be with me.
