Boone at 4 Years

Boone joined our family in April 2009 at three years old under the saddest of circumstances . . . his owner, Sharon Rich, passed away due to ovarian cancer at the age of 52. Sharon had owned flat-coats for nearly 20 years, and Boone was her first competition dog. He was the light of her life, and together they finished his Championship at 25 months old over specials for his third major, earned his Rally titles, CGC, and his Working Certificate, and earned two Started Hunting Retriever legs and a Junior Hunter leg. Sharon trained and ran Boone in the WC test while she was on chemo, just a few months before the cancer sadly overtook her. It was Sharon's wish that I take Boone if the worst happened. It is an honor to be entrusted with him, and I am grateful to Sharon's partner and Boone's hunting buddy, Oliver Sibert, for parting with him. Sharon did a wonderful job with Boone's training, and I look forward to the future with my new friend. Sharon's memory will live on through Boone, until they meet again.

Boone descends from all three of my previous flatcoats -- Reggae Rocker, Waylynn, and Cosmo. The breeding of Cosmo (Reggae's grandson) to Katie (Waylynn's daughter) that produced Boone's mother Snicker, who I have twice handled to Judges' Awards of Merit at National Specialties, was the only breeding that brought together both of my related lines. Bringing Boone here, where his mother was conceived, his grandmother Katie was born, and where Waylynn and later Cosmo ran and played, is an extraordinary "flashback" for us. Boone is family, coming home. We shed fresh tears over the tragedy that brought him here, even as we rejoice at his arrival "home".

In June 2009 at the National Specialty in Rhode Island, Boone was only entered in one event, and he won a placement in a large Working Retriever Dogs class under Swedish judge Lena Hagglund (Kennel O'Flanagan).

In Sept. 2009, at our first performance event together, Boone earned his second Junior Hunter leg. In Oct. he qualifed in a UKC fun hunt, and in Nov. he won Best of Breed over other specials at his first all-breed show of the year.

In March 2010, at our first Supported Entry together, Boone won the Working Dog class and the Judge's Award of Merit in Best of Breed both days; earned his first two CD legs with placements and High Flat-Coat/High Champion in Trials, and earned his first Rally Excellent leg with a placement. The following weekend he earned his first Novice Agility leg with a 95 score, his first time running an outdoor course; and in April 2010 he earned his third JH leg with no field training since late fall. On May 2, 2010, Boone finished his CD with three consecutive legs this spring, winning the Novice B class, and earned his second Rally Excellent leg. On May 30, 2010, Boone finished his RE in three consecutive trials with a score of 98 and second place in the Excellent B class, followed by Best of Breed and a Grand Champion point the next day.

In June 2010 at the National Specialty in IN, Boone won the Working Retriever Dog class under Sandra Lex, and earned his first RAE leg with a 100/placement in the Excellent B class. On the way home from the Specialty, he earned his fourth Junior Hunter leg, finishing the title in as many tests. In late June, he won his first Grand Championship major.

In fall 2010, Boone made his agility Jumpers debut, going two for two with first and second place. His working career came to an unexpected halt when owner-trainer-handler Melody was seriously injured, but in May 2011 Boone came back out in agility to qualify for his second NA leg at his first trial with Sherri Lilley Peck handling in a clean run 19 seconds under course time. Then he was back in the show ring with Melody, picking up Grand Championship points and making the cut in Working Dogs at the 2011 National Specialty, as well as earning his second RAE leg at the National with placements in both the Advanced B and Excellent B classes!

In early 2012, Boone was handled by Sherri to his third NAJ leg and the title! He also successfully learned to be my Medical Alert Service Dog, detecting and alerting me to low blood sugar. At the Supported Entry in March 2012, he earned his third RAE leg with 99's in both Excellent B (first place) and Advanced B (second place); won the Working Dog class both days; and won Best of Breed and a cut in Group on Sunday, all owner handled. In May of 2012, at his first shows since the Supported win, Boone won his third and fourth Grand Championship majors! At his next show in early June, Boone won Best of Breed for two more GCh points, and made the cut in Group! Shown five times in spring 2012, he picked up 13 Grand Championship points and made the cut both times we showed in Group.

At his next two shows in fall 2012, Boone won Select Dog in September and Best of Breed from the Veterans class in November, finishing the year with 22 Grand Championship points and all specials/majors requirements met!

In January of 2013, Boone completed his Grand Championship with his fifth major, finishing the title with GCh points won at his last seven consecutive shows, always owner handled.

At the CRFCRC Spring Supported Entry in March of 2013, Boone made his debut in Vet Sweeps -- and won Best in Veteran Sweepstakes! He also earned his fourth RAE leg with 97 (second place) in Exc. B and 99 (first place) Adv. B; his first BN leg with 198 (tied for first); and was unopposed both days in the Working Dog class. His final weekend count was 10 ribbons, a toy, a tote, a chair, an umbrella, and a couple of checks for the Sweeps wins!

In April 2013 at the National Specialty in GA, Boone was a busy boy and he brought home a Three Sport Award! He placed third in Veteran Sweeps 7-9 Years; made the cut in Gundog Sweeps; won the Working Retriever Dog class; placed second in Rally Advanced B; and qualified just out of the ribbons in Beginner Novice B obedience. He was not shown again until one show on November 2013, where he won Select Dog over other specials from the Veterans class for an extra Grand Championship major.

At 8 years old, Boone semi-retired from competition to focus primarily on his job as my Diabetic Alert Dog, which he seems to love! He is at stud to approved bitches, and his first litter (9 puppies) was born March 14, 2014, in Ohio. At a local obedience trial in June 2014, the month before his 9th birthday, Boone finished his BN title with another score of 198, this one for first place!

In April of 2015 at the National Specialty in MO, Boone entered the show ring for the first time since 2013 -- and won a Judge's Award of Merit in Best of Breed at nearly 10 years of age!

In July of 2016, two weeks before his 11th birthday, we said goodbye to Boone and sent him along to find Sharon Rich who has waited these past 7 years for him at the Rainbow Bridge. I still feel his presence, always the angel by my side.
